- Subject: IBM Initiates Beta Programs for LAN Server 3.0 and NTS/2
-
- OVERVIEW
-
- IBM is initiating a Beta program for future versions of their LAN
- Systems products. The software is being made available for evaluation
- and application development purposes and should NOT be used in pro-
- duction.
-
- The following products are currently available through the Beta
- program:
-
- * OS/2 LAN Server 3.0
-
- * IBM Network Transport Services/2
-
- OS/2 LAN SERVER 3.0
-
- OS/2 LAN Server Version 3.0 Advanced is the first network server to
- fully exploit the power of the OS/2* 2.0 operating system. New fea-
- tures include:
-
- * 386 HPFS, boosts overall performance
-
- * Peer Services, allows a OS/2 requester to share resources with one
- peer
-
- * Redirected Install, delivers unattended install
-
- * Greater than 254 sessions per domain, enhances adapter utilization
-
- * 802.2 Virtual Device Driver (VDD), enables DOS 802.2 applications
- to share an adapter with other DOS and OS/2 applications.
-
- * OS/2 TCP/IP coexistence, supports a greater range of protocols
-
- * Improved disk fault tolerance, Mirror without re-boot and Mir-
- roring of the boot drive
-
- * Local security, establishes additional security at the local work-
- station
-
- * Full Domain API, programming interface to the Domain Controller
- Data Base (DCDB)
-
- Complementing the OS/2 LAN Server are the DOS LAN Requester (DLR) and
- the OS/2 Requester. The DOS LAN Requester includes the IBM LAN Support
- Program Version 1.3, and has performance improvements over the pre-
- vious DOS LAN Requester. The OS/2 Requester has redirected install
- feature, 802.2 VDD, TCP/IP coexistence, and performance improvements.
-
- IBM NETWORK TRANSPORT SERVICES/2 (NTS/2)
-
- IBM Network Transport Services/2 provides:
-
- * Programming interfaces (NetBios, IEEE 802.2 and Network Driver
- Interface Specification (NDIS)) necessary for OS/2 2.0 LAN
- enablement. NTS/2 provides the transport protocols and network
- adapter software to run network applications.
-
- * Integrated with NTS/2 is LAN Configuration Installation Distrib-
- ution (CID) support which enables the LAN Adapter and Protocol
- Support (LAPS) installation diskette images to be installed and
- configured at a client workstation from a code server along with
- other CID enabled products.
-
- The installation process is performed by an individual who initi-
- ates the installation process at their workstation and performs
- other tasks such as removing/replacing diskettes when prompted and
- re-IPLing the system when prompted. This individual would not be
- required to know the responses to detailed product installation
- questions.
-
- The answers to the product installation questions are kept in
- response files which contain specific responses to each installa-
- tion question. The response files are unique to each product.
- Each product provides either a utility or a model which the system
- administrator can use to generate the response files.
-
- A procedure file which may be tailored is set up by a system
- administrator and stored on the code server. This procedure file
- contains the commands which initiate product installations for
- other CID enabled products such as IBM LAN Server 3.0.
-
- * Novell* NetWare* Requester support is enabled via NTS/2 allowing
- existing NetWare applications to access NetWare Servers through
- the NDIS interface. The data from the NetWare requester applica-
- tion is directed to the network adapter software associated with
- the either a token-ring or Ethernet adapter.
-
- * Using NTS/2, DOS applications written to the NetBios and IEEE
- 802.2 interfaces on OS/2 2.0 are supported. This virtual Local
- Area Network (LAN) support enables these DOS applications to share
- an adapter with other DOS and OS/2 applications running on the
- same machine.
-
- ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS
-
- To order Beta versions of the products mentioned above, do one of the
- following:
-
- * In the U.S., call 1-800-IBM-3040 - You will be charged for reprod-
- uction and distribution costs. Approximate costs will be $150 for
- the LAN Server 3.0 Beta package and $45 for the NTS/2 Beta
- package.
-
- * In Canada and Europe, contact your IBM Marketing Representative.
-
- * Note: At this time, these Beta programs are not available in
- Asia/Pacific.
-
- TECHNICAL SUPPORT
-
- Question and answer support for the Beta versions of these products
- will be provided by IBM on a "best effort" basis. Type "GO IBMOS2" or
- "GO OS2DEV" at the ! prompt. Then access the LAN Library section.
